STEVE SHIPLEY'S THE 7TH GUARD: WELCOME BRAVE NEW HEROES

Artist/author Steve Shipley, the genius behind The Space Sheriff and Drillbit, hits it out of the park yet again with his magnificent The 7th Guard.

The 7th Guard tells of brave officers from the realm of Golden Blue, who are assigned to protect Earth from any possible invasion.

In the initial issue, focus falls upon the Fifth Guardian and his comedic companion, Copenstrum, who cross paths with a distressed young lady, just as a rampaging, Sinterion robot enters the scene. Will our heroes save the day or face annihilation?! One thing is for certain: The excitement will satisfy from beginning to end. (A surprise epilogue adds to the action-packed elation, while working as a spectacular springboard for Issue #2.)

To order The 7th Guard's introductory installment, send $2.50 via Paypal to Mr. Shipley at steveshipley7@gmail.com. His dynamic creation will be in your possession in a mere matter of days.

PUPPIES BEHIND BARS: A CHARITABLE CAUSE

For the Christmas/holiday season, thoughts of charitable causes once more come to mind. For those who wish to make a positive impact on others, Puppies Behind Bars is a sincere, worth-while means to do so.

Puppies Behind Bars assists in canine training for wounded war veterans and first responders, who face difficulties with daily functions. In addition, the agency supplies crucial, bomb-detection dogs for police procedures. The canine training is administered by prisoners, who wish to give something beneficial to a society they've wronged in one way or another: a most honorable path toward redemption.

The charity ensures that inmates are prepared to the utmost, caring capacity before they commence their meticulous but nurturing lessons. Trainers and dogs are then teamed for two years, at the end of which the astute, adoring animals are dispatched to their designated guardians in need.

I'm a proud contributor of Puppies Behind Bars through the NJ Employee's Charitable Campaign. I do hope that others will contribute as well. The organization is a huge win-win for all involved.

RON FORTIER'S BROTHER BONES: GRAVE TALES, IN HARDCOVER

Ron Fortier's Undead Avenger resurfaces in a stylish hardback volume entitled Brother Bones: Grave Tales.

Inside are twelve, thrilling segments from Brother Bones - The Undead Avenger, plus the terrific Tapestry of Blood. That means readers are treated to Brother Bones' origin story, which springs from those tenacious but conflicting twins, Jack and Tommy Bonello, and then get tossed straight into Cape Noire's vast criminality, headlined by a rogues' gallery that exceeds even the creme de la creme of DC and Marvel. (My personal favorite among Bones' antagonists is Harry Beest. Gorilla Grodd, step aside!)

Fortier's writing is swift and stinging, as he presents one of the most original heroes to appear in New Pulp's ever expanding echelon. Through Brother Bones' exploits, Fortier stirs supernatural scenarios, exquisite horror and menacing humor; and Rob Davis' eerie interiors and Adam Shaw's creepy cover take the atmospheric package to a whole new shivering level.

This volume is also historic because it's Airship 27's first ever hardcover release, and there's no better character to have initiated the endeavor than Brother Bones. Even if one owns the Undead Avenger's previous releases, this volume is a handsome collectible that all devotees must possess.

TERRIFIC TEAM-UP IMAGE: CAP & NAMOR

I saw Red Notice...

Red Notice's arrival took me by surprise, but there it was, all ready to go on Netflix and right on the heels of my Get Back Disney+ indulgence, no less. Hot diggity!

The movie stars Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot (for all intents and purposes, Deadpool, Hercules and Wonder Woman) in a madcap, Bondian spree about retrieving the three (alleged), adorned egg-sculptures that Marc Antony gifted Cleopatra.

What makes this adventure such great fun is the banter among its principals, but also its globetrotting twists, which make one wonder who among the trio is fooling whom. The assumption is that Johnson's FBI Agent John Hartley is the good guy, Ryan Reynolds' Booth Nolan is the bad guy set to turn good, and Gal Gadot's "Bishop" is the presiding, manipulating baddie, but as the plot spins, not all is as it seems. (One even starts to question the film's good-gal pursuer, Ritu {The Umbrella Academy} Ayra's Agent Das, who has the ultra-buoyancy to keep resurfacing against all credible odds, not to mention the audacious intent of Chris {The Three Stooges '12} Diamantopoa's villainous Sotto Voce, a possessor of one of the fabled eggs.)

Rawson Marshall (Skycraper) Thurber's direction holds its own with the best of 007 directors, and his script is a crackerjack one, which lends itself well to its popular, screen personalities.

Steve Jablonisky's spy-thrill score cements everything, as does Marcus Forder's cinematography, so that when one isn't laughing (in particular at the inside-movie jokes) or second-guessing the sneaky surprises, it's easy to settle into what becomes an aesthetically pleasing, modern Our Man Flint or mega-budgeted Get Smart. (Now that I think of it, Johnson was in the latter's hefty remake. How's that for associated kismet?!)

To analyze Red Notice's histrionic points would spoil the adventure. It must be experienced in a fresh way, but it's suffice to say that it's enjoyable from start to finish, and yep, it could/should usher more.

I'm all for that. Red Notice (incidentally, a worldwide alert to seize those of monumental threat) isn't resolved with this picture, with more such "notices" insinuated by the time the end credits commence. Considering the leads' chemistry (and the opportunity to see Gadot don more slinky attire), this is a franchise just itchin' to be born, even if its relegation remains exclusive to streaming. Whatever the viewing format, let it happen. Red Notice II can't come fast enough in my eager estimation.
