FAREWELL, MAX VON SYDOW...

You achieved supreme status in a series of Ingmar Bergman classics ("The Magician" and "The Seventh Seal" perhaps being my personal favorites), but you traveled other impressive territory as well, Mr. Von Sydow, including the role of Christ in George Steven's "The Greatest Story Ever Told".

For imagi-movie. thriller and sprawling-adventure fans, you rocked the foundations of "The Exorcist"; "The Exorcist II: the Heretic"; "Dune '84"; "Never Say Never Again"; "Code Name: Emerald"; "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"; "Judge Dredd"; "Death Watch"; "The Night Visitor"; "Pelle the Conquerer"; "The Ultimate Warrior"; "Minority Report", "Brass Target"; "Conan the Barbarian '82"; "Flight of the Eagle"; "Shutter Island"; "Robin Hood '10"; "Dreamscape"; "Steppenwolf "; "Escape to Victory"; Three Days of the Condor"; "Voyage of the Damned"; and "Hurricane '79".

Some would say that your role of Ming the Merciless in "Flash Gordon '80" was your crowning achievement: a part that allowed you to channel both Charles Middleton and Alex Raymond, while making one of the most devilish villains conceived your very own.

Because you dared to stretch your horizons and display your vast talent time and again, you became a giant among the giants of cinema: an icon for the ages, whose artistic gleam will only glow ever brighter as the years follow.
