Michael Ferentino's Bedtime for Robots is no stranger to irony. The newly released Happy Ending Machine drives home this point per sixteen, searing tracks.
As should come as no surprise, a large chunk of the compilation's electronic inserts insinuate mind-altering science fiction.
Such is particularly epitomized in "Deleted Consciousness", which rolls a heavy wave of cerebral cleansing. As one listens, one's thoughts skid toward deflation, including a monumental loss of worry and woe, though perhaps not all for one's betterment ("Invasion of the Body Snatchers", anyone?).
Grouped with this treacherous track is "Grave 37" (a vibrant, vaulted sojourn); "Stoned Pussy" (a composition that could match any "Queen of Blood" clip); "The Ancient Ones" and "Dead Bird Omen" (both examples of high-tech, empire demise); plus the placidly raucous "This is Reality (for Genesis P)".
To blanket the aforementioned doom, Ferentino offers "Happy Land of Bunnies": a snappy selection that hops with sardonic joy, while referencing that all-star, fight feature, "Night of the Lepus".
Other tracks act as effective warm-ups and interludes, including "This Was Flesh" (sexy yet ferocious in the ol' Klingon way); "Salmon Bag" (tasty yet tart); "Ode" (a "Blade Runner homage, if ever there was one); "Skyclad" (a "Terminator"-ish side dish); "Sobbing Thistle"; "Distance"; and "No World Order" (the latter three suited for Mad Max chrome and grime); in addition to the hounding "Athena Collector" (a John Fowles for a dystopian future).
The title track, "Happy Ending Machine" is this anthology's apt finale: a perfect sendoff that signals Krell-like banter to tear down the walls of one 's surviving views.
Happy Ending Machine is a speculative-spelled journey that will, indeed, break one's brain, but also spring one to the highest, imaginative heights and the most satisfying lowest of lows.
