Sally the Zombie Cheerleader's School of Horror offers a new seminar on another great, Amicus anthology, 1967's Torture Garden!
The Columbia Pictures-financed Torture Garden is directed by Hammer veteran Freddie (Dracula Has Risen From the Grave) Francis, written by master raconteur Robert (Psycho) Bloch and produced by anthology maestros Milton Subotsky and Max J. Rosenberg.
The stories (or rather, visions) are induced by Burgess Meredith's midway psychic, Dr. Diablo, who serves a series of prophesized insights to his curious guests and their sideline participants: Peter Cushing, Jack Palance, Michael Ripper, Barbara Ewing, Michael Bryant, Robert Hutton, Beverly Adams, Catherine Finn, Bernard Kay, Maurice Denham, John Standing and Clytie Jessop as the wraparound's rigid but imposing Atropos.
The devilish tales feature competing, Poe collectors bound by Faustian fate, actors cursed by their synthetic beauty, a haunted piano that keeps its owner all to itself and a greedy gent coerced by a telepathic, killer cat. The collective ambiance is that of an old, horror paperback, with each clip gaining further intensity, like the flip of a page, tempting one to consume more, despite the looming terror.
Throughout the lesson, Sally shares facts and trivia on the production, including a scoop on its promotional, Torture Seeds giveaways. SkeleKat is on hand, as well, meowing her cute sarcasm whenever the frisky chance arises. (She's obviously enamored by the movie's feline insertion.)
This is a mandatory class, Fleshies, so please take your seats at
