The good ol' Duke gets the royal treatment in TOPIX Media Lab's John Wayne: The Official Collector's Edition.
This 98-page salute spans Wayne (aka Marion Robert Morrison)'s life, decade by decade, featuring his movies and collaborations with such influential directors as John Ford and Raoul Walsh.
Though not every movie is presented from Wayne's vast career, a number of powerhouse productions do shine through: True Grit, Rio Bravo, Stage Coach, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Shootist, The Searchers, The Cowboys, Hondo, The Big Trail, North to Alaska, Flying Leathernecks, The Sands of Iwo Jima and The Quiet Man, with a hearty dive into The Alamo, which Wayne directed, while portraying the mythic Davey Crockett.
There's also a fascinating section on Wayne's commissioned, gold-handled mugs, many painted by acclaimed artist Bob Williams, which the actor gave to cast and crew when productions ended.
Wayne's time as a football player, staunch patriot, faithful friend of actor Ward Bond and devoted father occupy a substantial portion of the publication, with many intimate, at-home photos adorning the text. (This edition even contains the welcoming intro, "Remembering My Dad," by Wayne's son, Ethan.)
John Wayne: The Official Collector's Edition is an essential tribute to one of cinema's greatest. Not only will the Duke's legion of fans enjoy it, but anyone who appreciates Hollywood's glory days, when movies were majestic and their stars were inspirations to us all.
John Wayne: The Official Collector's Edition can be purchased at drugstores, bookstores and supermarkets nationwide.
