The highly anticipated Jin & Tonik is at long last complete! Published by El Guapo Comics and written by Ron (The Boston Bombers) Fortier, with artwork by Cesar (The Red Ten) Feliciano (abetted by colorist Matt Webb and letterer Mike Belcher), the title presents the escapades of a Russian super-soldier, Darya, aka Tonik, and a crackerjack assassin, Sammy, aka Jin. They are fated to team in the style of Man from U.N.C.L.E.'s Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, as members of a benevolent group called the Amaglan Circle.
"Desert Visions" is the intro issue, and its contents are conveyed by an Arizona mystic, Eddie Nightsky, who witnesses the genesis of our titular heroes. This clairvoyant structure offers character-building flashbacks and later-day segues that include a vengeful, Thailand battle with opium smugglers; a birthing tragedy at a Hong Kong hospital; a violent meeting with the KGB; and last but not least, a weird, embryotic experiment in the icy heart of Siberia. These intricate connections are contrasting, but the feverish pace makes the ingredients blend in the tastiest of ways (just like gin and tonic).
In addition to its budding, U.N.C.L.E. seeds, Jin and Tonik has the potential to rival the Green Hornet and Kato, the John Steed-helmed Avengers and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, with plenty of 007 and Bruce Lee trimmings to keep readers thirsty for more. And I do hope there's more. This is one epic that demands further servings!
Be on the lookout. The exciting Jin & Tonic will be available through vendors soon.
