Nicolas Picciotto's Higher Selves (served through the Submarine Broadcasting Company) is an electronic EP of futuristic dimensions, while it acts as a companion piece to the artist's profound Beings from the Origins (see July '22 post). This new experimental chapter consists of three epic tracks which inspire one to break dystopic chains and seize holistic autonomy.
"GET UP" opens the event, rushing like Blade Runner intersecting Brave New World, pushing ever harder against a technological wall that one must face, but only when subconscious defiance is used. The composition accelerates like a timebomb beneath an unstable, disco floor. Any second (tick, tick tick)--Kaaaboom!--though the collapse comes all for the sake of communal harmony.
"YOU GET IT ALL BACK AS DESIRED" reflects the same desperate percolation, though steadier, steelier in its projection, its fiery fuel so calculating that it brings to mind Ethan Hunt and Lemmy Caution. Here the chords cut with glances that shift from left to right as one administers an omniscient coup, breaking symbolic bricks to sow symbolic seeds.
For the finale, the eponymous "HIGHER SELVES", Picciotto dispatches the full road to redemption, tempered by cheerful pressure. This one works as an unrealized epilogue to 1984, where Winston doesn't succumb to the inhumane party, but rather runs off with Julia with middle finger raised, screaming at the top of his lungs that suppressive gloom is doomed. The track is cruel, crafty and in its generous outcome, a landslide victory for both the ears and the soul.
I've listened to Picciotto's EP four times thus far, and each time it's inspired me more than before. I'll listen to it again and again, and so will you, if you're so inclined to seek a better tomorrow.
