Collection Recommendation: Mr. Lobo's Not Very Spooky Spooktacular (Featuring The Visitants)

Mr. Lobo's Not Very Spooky Spooktacular is a Cinema Insomnia Blu-ray extravaganza that'll satisfy all "misunderstood" sensibilities, in that it's anchored by the appeasing and pleasing sci-fi, cult classic (drum roll, please), writer/director/producer Rick (Vice Academy) Sloane's The Visitants!

The Visitants is a cheerful, 1986 creation that epitomizes the warm, fuzzy ambiance of those good, ol' midnight-picture/drive-in shows of years gone by. It's also an ambitious overlap of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Plan 9 From Outer Space, Teenagers From Outer Space, Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, Happy Days and Archie Comics, not to mention Jack Finney's amazing short story, "Such Interesting Neighbors".

As for the plot, an alien couple (Jordana Capra and Joel Hile) lands in a teen-teeming town in the 1950s, looking for a place to stay to launch their invasion. From there, hilarity unfolds as the fish-out-of-water duo tries to blend in, all to no avail.

This special, Visitants presentation is surrounded by Halloween insertions, abetted by cult-oriented trailers ushered by Mr. Lobo and his special guests, Sally the Zombie Cheerleader; Romana; Miss Mittens; Nexeter (Roxanne Guarino); her assistant (Dixie Delamorto Lobo); corporate hotshot, Alan N. Smithee (who just so happens to sport a startling resemblance to our host); and the melodious Incredibly Strange Creatures Band.

The Not So Very Spooky Spooktacular may not be heavy on spine-tingling gimmicks, but it sure delivers in all the right, entertaining spots, making this an enjoyable essential for every Cinema Insomnia collection.
