R.I.P. JACK BENDER...

You covered sports and political essays in a ceaseless stream that made your talent accessible to thousands.

You also forged a path into comics, with Don Martin's The Nutheads and even Batman, but from 1991 onward, it was your precious contributions to V.T. Hamlin and Dave Graue's Alley Oop that distinguished your career.

Oop is the Stone Age equivalent of Al Capp's Li'l Abner and the forerunner to Hanna-Barbera's The Flintstones, a good-natured brute who supplied satirical commentary on present-day life through wholesome misadventure. Your loving, respectful understanding of the character (along with the endearing help of your wife, Carole) sealed and ascended Oop's many quirks and heroics without a hitch, ensuring he remained in the public eye when he may have otherwise perished.

Your artistic care and consideration (no matter the theme or topic) did us all enormous good, Mr. Bender, and our imaginations will stay nice and grateful for your expansive, pop-cultural cheer.
