ROBERT MATUZSAN'S MARINES DON'T HAVE CURLERS (FIFTY YEARS BEHIND A STYLING CHAIR)

My barber, Robert Matuzsan, happens to be an author. His book, Marines Don't Have Curlers: Fifty Years Behind a Styling Chair, is an absolute joy to absorb.

Like the original release, the "reloaded" edition includes heartfelt and amusing antidotes. They range from pageant-show mishaps, clients with particular, if not peculiar habits and even a would-be encounter with actress Brenda Vaccaro. There's also Matuzsan's biographical lead-in, which tells how he entered the hair-cutting business while in the Marines, an unlikely turn that became a lifelong passion.

To make the reading experience extra breezy, Matuzsan's writing style is congenial and to the point, allowing his reflections to flow in the digestible style of Michael Weldon's Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film, only Matuzsan's entries are based on a workingman's everyday ins and outs: ideal and identifiable for anyone who's ever held a job.

Marines Don't Have Curlers has undeniable, charm: a great gift that will please anyone who engages it. I, for one, will read it again and again.
