Alas, this one was a toughie to seize (even with my subscription in full swing), but well worth the wait, with an engrossing article on revered, science-extrapolation artist, Chesley "Destination Moon" Bonestell (including a fond focus on Douglass M. Stewart Jr.'s documentary tribute, "A Brush with the Future"); and interviews with character-actor idols, Rad Fulton (aka Jim Westmoreland) and Pat "Horror High/"Twisted Brain" Cardi; plus "Monsters! Monsters! Everywhere!"
There's also inspiring coverage on those handy, movie death rays (Chapter 6, no less); the legendary Stan "the Man" Lee (take that, Bill Maher!); the "Sire of Splatter", Herschell Gordon Lewis; and childlike filmmaker Edward D. Wood Jr.'s frisky fiction.
Snatch a copy of Filmfax #153 while the chance is in view. This one's far too important to forgo.
Ah, the autumn winds are in full swing, and so is the latest Airship 27 Podcast, steered by faithful Captain Ron Fortier and Chief Engineer Rob Davis.
This installment is a poignant one, as our gracious hosts pay tribute to Marvel master, Stan Lee. Ron and Rob tell how Stan the Man revitalized the comic-book scene and inspired them to write, publish and illustrate--in addition to giving us all colorful characters and bold adventures we'll cherish for a lifetime. (Their expressed respect for Lee is comforting, especially in light of Bill Maher's derisive remarks on the legend: the sting of which still has many of us bursting at the Hulkian seams.)
Ron and Rob also take time to reference Airship 27's current and upcoming releases, including the major, hot-off-the-press "Bass Reeves: Frontier Marshal, Vol 3": see Nov's "bizarrechats" review. (Incidentally, the Bass Reeves series is one of Airship 27's most popular and demands a whirl, even if by some inexplicable chance one isn't partial to westerns.)
Ron and Rob also discuss the re-release of their powerful novella, "Faces of Fear", which teams the Purple Scar with the Black Bat: see June '17 review. This revised edition will enchant readers like never before, with its polished text and stunning artwork. In my estimation, "Faces of Fear" is one of the most atmospheric crossovers conceived in years. (BTW: The new edition features a prologue from Ron, which reveals his story's nifty Easter Eggs, plus there's the fellows' exciting, comic bonus: "Secret Agent X: Race With the Devil": see Dec '17 review.)

You started early but strong, championing Marvel when it was still Atlas and Timely, collaborating through the years with such artistic giants as Steve Ditko, Moebius and Jack Kirby.
Thanks to you, Captain America and Sub-Mariner dominated a new, silvery age, and you never failed to publicize their virtues, paving the way for Spider-man, Iron Man, Black Panther, the Incredible Hulk, the Mighty Thor, Daredevil, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four.
When others dismissed comics as childish and uncool, you displayed them like coveted metals, celebrating and mingling among Marvel's characters in blockbuster movies and even hosting your own superhuman, television show.
You were a one and only, Mr. Lee...Stan the Man to many a starry-eyed youngster and jaded adult: those eager to believe in magic and that good could triumph over evil. You granted it all with arms wide open and a huge, welcoming heart. Your generous, iconic legacy will live on, cradled among the titans of the past, present and those yet to be born...
