RON FORTIER'S CAPTAIN JAIN MARLEE, SPACE SMUGGLER: FIVE STAR-SPANNING STORIES

Writer Ron Fortier's Captain Jain Marlee, Space Smuggler presents a feisty, young heroine cut from the same, intrepid cloth as Stella Star and Han Solo, packaged with striking, cover artwork by the one and only, Rob Davis!  

This Redbud Studio curation actually features five, Fortier adventures, with astonishing imagery from today's top, comic artists. 

The initial tale is the uber-crafty "The Smuggler's Lament," which sports stunning illustrations by Brian Level, with Chris McQuaid lettering. The chilling second, "A Cold Demise," features ornate panels by Luis Rivera (who gives Fortier a swell cameo as the efficient Constable Glick), with shading and lettering by Warren Montgomery. The third entry, "The Fugitive Prince," flaunts cyberpunk-ish, RanXerox-spun graphics by Richard Jun, with Elisa St. John lettering; and for "Cats' Ears," Fortier's Mr. Jigsaw collaborator, Gary Kato, bestows ebullient art and lettering for what acts as a raucous but breezy chapter. And last but not least, Shane Alden (penciler) and Ariel Aquire (inker) bring the epic "Ghost World" to grand, haunting life, with lettering by James Gaubatz, in a fable that invokes the dark, exploratory depths of Alien, 65 and Event Horizon. 

The individualized, artistic styling for this volume is fascinating to behold (done in the varying vein of Batman: Gotham Knight and The Animatrix), but the developmental strand is steady throughout, making Marlee a credible, in-depth character per the assemblage. She's not only appealing on the outside, but cool and calculating within. 

Because of this release, Marlee has become one of my favorite, astral adventurers. I only wish I had been astute enough to have embraced her fine saga sooner!

RON FORTIER'S BLACK LION RETURNS

Redbud Studio (supported by the prolific Indy Planet) strikes like lightning with an energetic extension to Ron Fortier's Black Lion premiere. 

As such, Issue #2 depicts the further exploits of intrepid Kuwait veteran/Navy SEAL, Jamal Lyon, who's weighed by dangerous odds, but has just the right steeliness to hold his own and then some, while lending a helping hand to anyone in need. 

Fans of tactical action won't be disappointed with this latest effort, as Fortier's storytelling skills are once more in crisp wrong-never-makes-right form. Kevin Johnson, Arrick Church and Warren Montgomery's collective artistry also gives Lyon's saga a textured sense of roughness, empathy and credibility.

Black Lion is just warming up, so fans of Rambo-styled espionage and hard-hitting heroics should jump aboard. This historic foundation shouldn't be missed, but embraced with unconditional avidity and respect.

MR. JIGSAW #16: JIGGY DRIVES TO THE RESCUE!!!

Ron Forter's Mr. Jigsaw returns in Red Bud Studio's sixteenth issue of the jovial superhero of a thousand parts. 

 

Fortier's enclosed tale, "License to Drive", pairs fun with responsibility, highlighted by Gary Kato's wonderful artwork.  

This time out Jiggy is asked by the police to conduct a don't-text-and-drive campaign. However, our hero has never earned his driver's license, so the campaign's novelty becomes one where he'll earn his license while demonstrating to the public the dos and don'ts of driving. As luck would have it, a jewelry-store heist interferes with the noble endeavor, leading Mr. Jigsaw to bolster his driving skills to save the day! Without question, this is one of Jiggy's most rewarding adventures. 

Also, as a great companion piece, #16 contains a bouncy Blimp and Turtle tale, with story and art by Jon Bonjour. It's geared to put a smile on every reader's face.

SECRET AGENT X COMIC BOOK ZOOMS FORTH FROM ROSEBUD STUDIO!!!

Ron Fortier and Ron Davis give a great spin on an old, pulp favorite: SECRET AGENT X!!! And let me tell you folks, this 30-page, Redbud Studio comic book is beyond action-packed!!!

In the presented adventure, "Race with the Devil", the mysterious "Man of  a Thousand Faces" pursues Nazi Era intrigue, with Fortier's script capturing the tense flavor of the perilous time and Davis bringing it all to life through his stupendous illustrations.

Fortier's tale ideally places X within all aspects of the excitement, even when the agent's presence isn't necessarily discernible. By tradition, we shouldn't know X's real identity, let alone his actual face, yet at the same time, Fortier allows us to know the famed agent inside out. He's a hero we can easily cheer on and call a friend, despite his blending into the scenery.  

X's lovely Betty Dale is also on hand, as well as his Washington "controller", the resourceful K-9, plus the sadly misled Inspector John Burks, in what becomes a tense pursuit to protect a foreign dignitary before the dastardly Colonel Kraunz does him in. 

X made his debut decades ago in Ace Magazines, and within recent years (thanks to Airship 27 Productions) the character has gained a remarkable resurgence. X is a veritable forerunner to James Bond, Derek Flint and Napoleon Solo, but he was also a contemporary of the Shadow, the Spider and Doc Savage. Though X's escapades more than hold up to those of any modern avenger, he thrives best in the luxurious and atmospheric past. Fortier and Davis strike just the right balance with "Race with the Devil", so fans of the disguise-switching crusader needn't worry. This one delivers the goods from both ends of the imaginative spectrum. 

In a time when some find it fashionable to tell comic-book tales in shades of gray, we need more straight-forward variations like Fortier/Davis' courageous concoction. On this basis, I hope "Race with the Devil" proves successful enough (and it darn well should) to spawn many Redbud Studio sequels.
