I was itchin' for a new Jesse Lalochezia Gutierrez release, and lo and behold, just in time to scratch my itch, the artist supplies a limited-edition "Bandido Studios #Inktober Sketchbook".
Gutierrez's latest compilation shows off his varying, artistic nuances and all conveniently stashed into one, super-cool publication.
Inside "#Inktober", one will find striking tributes to Lon Chaney Sr.; Caroline Munro; Tor Johnson; El Santo; the Twins of Evil; Universal's Frankenstein Monster and his Bride...plus an accompanying spree of mobsters; demons; extraterrestrials; and of course, those voluptuous ladies, carved with curves that go on forever. There's also a terrific, illustrated Gutierrez short story, "The Teleporon Metathesis", which just so happens to feature the stunning semblances of none other than Christopher Lee and Ernest Borgnine!!!
As acknowledged in my previous posts, Gutierrez's style is a blend of Italian, Spanish and Mexican horror movies; as well as spaghetti westerns; including the celebrated efforts of Paul Naschy; Jess Franco; Mario Bava; Dario Argento; and Sergio Leone. The results are sprawling and cinematic, with Gutierrez's comic panels often resembling the best in European poster art.
As a bonus to the sketchbook, Gutierrez gifted me one of his new card sheets, which features an array of phenomenal pictures, plus a flip-side image of his famous, Bandido Studios logo: indeed, a wonderful, supplemental collectible.

Jesse Lalochezia Gutierrez has a mighty fine surprise for his fans--two, super-duper, comic creations in which they can indulge, with all the cool, brash, exploitation elements we've come to know and love from this marvelous artist/storyteller!!!
"Night of the Bloody Chupa-Apes", by its very name, invokes the gruesome, Mexican horror classic, "Night of the Bloody Apes" (aka, "The Horrible Man-Beast": a quasi remake of "Doctor of Doom", as one might know). And yes, Gutierrez's tale is tinged with qualities of '69 film, but his story equally conjures the atmosphere of New World Picture's drive-in favorite, "Humanoids from the Deep", in the way his green simians slink their way into attack. There's also a fine heapin' of beautiful babes, including the voluptuous Tina and the buxom Batwoman; capped by one helluva rambunctious, lucha-libre climax. Also, don't be surprised if that shape-shifting, "brainiac" Baron Salazar surfaces or a particular, pasty-faced chauffeur in the "Burnt Offerings" vein.
In addition to "Chupa-Apes", Gutierrez gives us his latest chapter in the devilishly dynamic, "Phantom of the Barrio" saga. Issue #3 extends the investigative, Edgar Wallace structure we've come to expect, tinged by an atmosphere that smacks of Argento, Bava, Naschy, and Ossorio. Most importantly, the Phantom continues to heighten his reign of terror in the most merciless of ways: precisely what we fans crave.
What's neat about the Phantom is his slick, off-kilter, guitar-strummin' style: in one sense, an embodiment of Angela and Luciana Giussani's Diabolik, but fueled by the wry drive of Jose Mojica Marin's Coffin Joe and Wes Craven's Freddy Krueger.
I adore both issues and recommend them to any one with a sincere interest in collecting the best among today's indie comics.
BTW: To accompany my order, Gutierrez included a limited-edition, "Mexi-Loteria" card sheet, which presents a superb smattering of his colorful artwork. To enhance this fine collectible, the back features a reproduction of the gutsy, Pancho Gila/Bandido Studios logo. To say the least, I'm most pleased and grateful.

Jesse Lalochezia Gutierrez's TANGIBLE VANDALISM #3 has hit print and boy, does it ever rival expectations, but then Gutierrez's work has never failed to surprise and stimulate.
The latest installment pays proper homage to the Mexican monster-movie/wrestling superhero scene. Tangible Vandalism #3: The Mexi-Horror has it all, in this regard, including the lovely Tina and super-wrestler, the Aztec Angel as its hosts; plus Dracula; the Frankenstein Monster; and the Wolfman in a surreal "Three Bears" variation. There are also wonderful sketches of the Batwoman (based on Mexi-movie lore); the Baron of Terror (aka, the Brainiac); Phil Tucker's much maligned Ro-Man; and more!!!
Of course, if you're a Gutierrez fan, you already know what distinguishes his Bandido Studios Comics and Arts entries: ultra-detailed illustrations, snappy dialogue, inside jokes and plenty of feminine curves. Each and every page of Tangible Vandalism delivers in this respect, making it more imaginative (and therefore, superior) to the many predictable comics one finds in most mainstream stores.
If you're in tune with Gutierrez's distinguished fancies (and how could you not be?), you'll jump at the chance to purchase a copy. At a mere $5, you're guaranteed to get more than get your money's worth.

Jesse Gutierrez succeeds again with "Behind the Panels": a superb "gossip and rumors" supplement, which grants us a tour of the famed Bandido Studios, hosted by the enticing Erika Adams and featuring the tantalizing Tina and the adorable Q.T. Pie.
This special edition offers plenty of Gutierrez's biting humor, granting us further insight into his Barrio Blues mythology. It also presents the expected, wide range of quirky characters. I, for one, had tons of fun reading and revisiting the various parts of the comedic romp--and of course, getting more than an eyeful of those lovely ladies.
If you're a connoisseur of Gutierrez's unique blend of movie-inspired storytelling, "Behind the Panels" is guaranteed to tickle your fancy; so hop on board and order your copy today.

To read a Jesus "Jesse" Gutierrez's Bandido Studios's comic is to become absorbed in not a mere mainstream tale told in panels, but rather a grandiose Mexploitation storyboard intended to unfurl in one's mind. Barrio Blues #3 is one such fine case in point.
The voluptuous Tina and Q.T. Pie are back, embroiled in buxom, revenge hi-jinks against old-school villainy. Just keep in mind, the Barrio entries aren't for kids, the squeamish or the narrow-minded. This is a grim melodrama: modernized, stylized and serialized. Gutierrez also adds realistic dialogue and identifiable references to his segments, like Cheech and Chong, Godzilla...a handy drive-in theater: all of it seasoning the adventurous panache.
In addition to Gutierrez's curvaceous ladies, I'm particularly fond of a guy named Slyde: a common enough fella on the outside, but with an inherent cool, keen sensibility. Oh, and then there's the adversarial Hector: a real despicable son of gun, if you catch my drift. Hey, a good villain always adds to the fun.
No one stirs a mix like Gutierrez, and I've seen my fill of innovative comics over the years. Indeed, whether one starts with the latest installment or goes back to the saga's foundation, it's all good, and to those who know pop culture, this one's gonna hit cozily close to home.
