WE BELONG DEAD'S ROGER CORMAN TRIBUTE

The latest We Belong Dead is a wondrous, 110-page compilation known as The Roger Corman Tribute Issue (presented in Poescope and Trip-o-Vision), and adorned by Josh Ryals' striking, Corman/Red Masque, portrait cover.

My friend and writer/director/producer extraordinaire, Ansel (Loon Lake/The Great Nick D) Faraj, supplies a detailed, reflective contribution to the curation, celebrating Corman's one-of-a-kind, far-out, LSD extravaganza, The Trip.

Faraj captures the movie's bizarre essence, analyzing Corman's hypnotic, visual and editing style for Jack Nicholson's mind-bending script. As a director, Faraj has that special knack to nail his subject, and his respect and understanding of The Trip comes through in spades. In fact, The Trip had a profound influence on the director's super-surreal Todd Tarantula. At any rate, Faraj's assessment certainly made me adore the movie (and its "Lovely Sort of Death") to an even higher, appreciative degree, and considering how much the movie has enthralled me over the years, that's saying something.

In addition to Faraj's trippy essay, The Roger Corman Tribute Issue contains comparable, heartfelt expressions of appreciation for The Beast with 1,000,000 Eyes (by Brian Hoxsey), Day the World Ended (by Alan Tromp), It Conquered the World (by Ken Shinn), Not of This Earth (by Steven West), Attack of the Crab Monsters (by James Lechner), Viking Women and the Sea Serpent (by David Dent), War of the Satellites (by David Dent), Teenage Caveman (by David Dent), A Bucket of Blood (by Steven West), The Wasp Woman (by Ernie Magnotta), House of Usher (by Simon J. Ballard), Last Woman on Earth (Jason D. Brawn), The Little Shop of Horrors (by Steven West),  Roger Corman: An Eye for Talent (by Andy Allard), Creature from the Haunted Sea (by David Dent), Pit and the Pendulum (by Sarah Butler), Premature Burial (by Kevin Nickelson), Tower of London (by Ian Talbot Taylor), The Raven (by Stephen Hatcher), The Terror (by Ian Talbot Taylor), The Haunted Palace (by Dawn Dabell), X - Man with the X-Ray Eyes (by Andy Stanton), The Masque of the Red Death (by Matthew E. Banks), The Tomb of Ligeia (by Eric McNaughton), Roger Corman, Producer (by Simon J. Ballard), De Sade (by Kevin Nickelson), Gas-s-s-s (by John Harrison), Frankenstein Unbound (by Dean M. Drinkel), Roger Corman Tribute (by Peter Fuller and Victoria Price), and At Home With a Legend: A Roger Corman Interview

The essays are crammed with crisp, vibrant stills, lobby cards and posters, and the issue is available in both hardback and paperback.

This is one of the finest homages in print, and that it exalts one of the all-time greats only makes it all the more special.
