Mr. Lobo's Cinema Insomnia presents another cinematic great, The Mighty Peking Man (aka Goliathon) or for the purposes of this historic, Blu-ray release, The Mighty Peking Kong.
Okay, maybe it's not one of the greats in the eyes of obnoxious highbrows, but it's still an enjoyable, make-a-buck effort from the prolific Shaw Brothers, and as such acts as a respectable reply to Dino De Laurentiis/John Guillermin's King Kong remake. This 1977 entry is also a pretty cool, jungle-girl epic, which Quentin Tarantino thought highly enough to sponsor for re-release about a decade back. (Hey, not too shabby!)
Peking Kong was directed by Meng-Hua Ho and penned by Kuang Ni, with the gorgeous, underdressed Evelyne Kraft as the Ann Darrow/Dwan/Jill Young/Sheena-styled Samantha Ah Wei. Danny Lee portrays Johnnie Feng, the knockoff's Jack Driscoll-ish protagonist. Though the couple holds the colossal creature (an uncredited, ape-suited actor) close to their honorable hearts, this doesn't prevent circumstances from reaching an explosive, heartbreaking finale.
Babs From the Front Desk (Dixie Dellamorto Lobo); the cute-as-a-button Kogarella; Countess Bloodsugar (Jessie Seeherman); titanic Fox Martin; Commander Micronauti (Crystal Quinn); and the crafty Dr. Sphincter (Nicole M. King) are special guests on this installment. To support their interludes, Mr. Lobo presents a congealing snack menu, as well as an informative seminar on quicksand, accompanied by complementary, submerging snippets and an assortment of simian salutes, including a roaring, Rankin/Bass King Kong Show episode.
The poor Peking Kong is quite a misunderstood creature, and the same can be said of this 1970s gem, one that every Cinema Insomnia fan should have on hand for those always bound-to-strike, sleepless nights.
