Titans Phase 4: Magic, Luthor & More

Titans: Season 4 has commenced, and its two-part teaser is a Lex Luthor-kicked winner, where the mastermind foe has delved into the occult, while seeking his semi-son, Conner Kent, who's also part Kal-El. Which side of the genetic pool will our super-clone sway? Ah, now that's the big, mysterious lure of Season 4, or is it? This one may be more magical than scientific; we'll see.

In addition to Joshua Oprin's Superboy and Titus Welliver's bearded Luthor to kick off the season, we'll get resumed visits from Brenton Twaites' Nightwing, Jay Lycurgo's Robin-to-be, Anna Diop's Starfire, Teagan Croft's Raven and Ryan Potter's Beast Boy. To bounce off the team, Brec Bassinger's Stargirl says hello, as does Franka Potente's Mother Mayhem, Joseph Morgan's Brother Blood and Lisa Ambalavanar's Jinx.

Yeah, it's another star-studded string (in both thespians and characters) all right, but again, its success all swings back to how strong the villainy is (along with that villainy's hows and whys). Vincent Kartheiser's Scarecrow will be a hard act to follow, for though the actor reputedly rattled his fellow performers on Titans' third-season set, he faithfully stole the show.

No matter what's in store, it should be good to at least some degree or another. Titans has proven itself a better series than most acknowledge, despite it rolling into an impressive fourth quadrant. Its content is hard-hitting and bright, whimsical and erudite. That means it's clever, and above all, for any Batman fan, the Nightwing (Dick Grayson)/Robin (Tim Drake) variable is, in itself, an essential cause to view.

One can catch Season 4 on DC-oriented HBO Max (there are ten more installments to unfurl), and if one hasn't caught the first three seasons, this is an ideal time to binge.
