Every July, a spree of Hallmark novelty ornaments enters stores: far too many to detail for my confined blog, but as I did last year (when I spotlit the "Star Trek--TMP" 40th Anniversary Enterprise), I've again fallen back on "Trek", choosing a trio of figures for the Hallmark 2020 premiere, which are part of what's called "The Storytellers" series.
The set, sculpted by Jake Angell, was inspired by the classic, alternate-reality episode "Mirror, Mirror", written by Jerome Bixby and directed by Marc Daniels. Each battery-operated ornament features the chosen characters stationed on stylish bases.
Each base lights up when one pushes an inconspicuous button upon it, generating a soothing, bluish aura that stands in contrast to the figures' unorthodox, edgy semblances.
Also, by pressing the button, each character elicits lines from the episode. When the bases are linked per a Keepsake power chord, the vocalizations create a "Mirror, Mirror", dialogue flow. (BTW: The Uhura ornament won't be released until October, though Kirk and Sulu are currently available, so to get the full, interactive effect, one must wait until autumn.)
The trio is a neat, flip-side way to pay homage to these legendary "Trek" personalities. My only gripe--no parallel Spock! Ah, well, I guess there's always next year.
