NOSFERATU (A SYMPHONY OF TERROR) 1922: A CLASSIC MONSTERS OF THE MOVIES TRIBUTE

As an ideal endorsement for the progressing, Nosferatu-mania, writers/researchers Nige Burton and Jamie Jones have quite the parasitic treat to share: a Classic Monsters of the Movies Nosferatu (Eine Symphonie des Grauens) 1922 Ultimate Guide. 

Most fans know that all prints of F.W. Murnau's (unlicensed) adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula were to be destroyed, per a legal outcome that favored Stoker's widow, but of course, the German-Gothic masterpiece survived purgation and has since gone on to influence other submissions in the vampire/Dracula canon, with actor Max Shreck's frightful, rodent semblance having become a stand-out in sheer, creep-out terror. 

Burton and Jones cover the necessary bases with their 36-page volume, including how Murnau and his deft associates constructed the movie, in addition to listing satisfying biographies on its once elusive players, not only Schrek, but Greta Schroeder, Gustav von Wagenheim, John Gottowt, Alexander Granauch, Ruth Lanschoff ... and Max Nemetz.  

Among the supplemental facts, the vast, expressionistic impact of Murnau's creation is essayed at length by the authors, who also detail the movie's important restorations, which have further entrenched it as one of the most frightful productions of any era. (Really, how many modern fright-fests even come close?) 

As special bonuses, this commemorative, 36-page issue contains delicious quotes, insightful trivia, rare photos and colorful, publicity materials, which in their own right, match the movie's avant-garde allure. (It would now be beyond grand if Burton and Jones tackled Werner Herzog/Klaus Kinski's acclaimed, 1979 remake. Hint, hint, my scholarly friends.)

Collectible Time #65: Jonathan Myers Nosferatu "Symphony of Horror" Prints

My talented friend, Jonathan Myers, is working on an epic, graphic-novel tribute to F.W. Murnau's chilling, silent "Dracula" adaptation, "Nosferatu". To keep us content while his Max Schreck salute is completed, he's offering three atmospheric prints, culled from his dark work in progress. The series, like the developing novel, is entitled "Symphony of Horror", and its entries are available through Society6, with each print measuring a stylish 7" x 10". 

"Nosferatu Deathbird" (above) represents the Count's eerie control over the elegant, young couple featured, with menacing, shifting eyes and a clawed hand of disquieting command. The blue backdrop meshes well with the Count's circled orbs, accented by earthy browns and a sprinkle of glowing yellow. 

"Shadow of Nosferatu" (below) offers another chilling angle of the Count, with his haunting, contemplative countenance stationed in the lower portion and smoky, ascending plumes standing in lieu of his unraveling thoughts. 

Last but not least is a design of Gothic furnishing called "Nosferatu Clock": layered in rich detail and ominous atmosphere. The deep-blue backdrop sets off the grays and brownish reds, giving the structure both distinction and a quality of dread. 

One can, in fact, order the prints framed (as I opted to do), but in either format, one will surely be pleased with the results, particularly if one fancies the 1922 Murnau classic or simply Gothic horror in general.
