As some learned through a previous post, I have a story in Eighth Tower's upcoming, Dark Fiction: Tales of the Blind Dead (Amando de Ossorio) anthology. I'd like to focus on its prime character for this reflection: an apish (and in the story's progression, blind) gent named Odo.
Odo, contrary to the name's primal sound, signifies sophistication, which goes contrary to my character's relegation. That's why I named him so, for the sake of irony, and the fact that the "moniker" was prominent in medieval times. Of course, Rene Auberjunois' Deep Space 9 character couldn't help but come to mind when I chose, and in this respect, my Odo is an affectionate nod to Star Trek's.
Otherwise, we're dealing with a biological throwback (a troglodyte, if one will). I name-dropped similar characters in my story, though couldn't cover them all without risking the novelty turning top heavy. My Odo is perhaps most in tune with Dave Prowse's creature in Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell, though nowhere near as malformed, but he also taps DC's famed villain, Vandal Savage, though without the superior intellect.
I also reference other ape-based stories in my yarn, including Edgar Allan Poe's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and Clive Barker's "New Murders in the Rue Morgue," as well as the 1932, Robert Florey adaptation of the former, starring Bela Lugosi.
My story is about evolution, both on a physical and spiritual plane. As such, I've called it "The Templar Evolved."
Despite its varied ingredients, "The Templar Evolved" is in every way a Blind Dead (evil Knights Templar) homage to the core.

I'll keep readers abreast of the volume's progression when further details emerge.
