Director/writer/producer Ansel (Loon Lake/The Great Nick D) Faraj has cooked up a delightful, YouTube essay on MGM's VHS/DVD Midnite Movies, a cinematic series that hit the collectible scene more than twenty years ago.
For those who know and love these releases (that is, their grand, lurid titles, with their striking, poster-based covers and neon-blue banners), Faraj's Memories of Midnite Movies will prove both informative and quite frankly, a ton of fun.
In his essay, Faraj reminisces on how he'd phone MGM to get scoops on what was set for release and how he was disappointed when they ended, only to witness Sony and Fox revive the series for a time, but as he conveys, there was nothing quite like the original, MGM queue with its top-notch transfers and fulfilling extras.
To bracket his commentary, Faraj includes trailers from several of the releases, including The Return of Count Yorga, The Masque of the Red Death, The Witchfinder General (The Conqueror Worm), The Dunwich Horror, Planet of the Vampires, The House on Skull Mountain, The Mephisto Waltz, Werewolves on Wheels, The Wild Angels, The Trip and The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini. The colorful spree is entertaining and relaxing, as the trailers act as vivid works of art in their own avid right.
One can still obtain the Midnite releases if one searches. (For example, a friend of mine just landed a double whammy of Motel Hell and Deranged.) In this respect, Faraj's informative sojourn will certainly inspire viewers to embark on finding more than a few of the titles he spotlights.
