THE BIRDS: A CLASSIC MONSTERS OF THE MOVIES TRIBUTE

Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, is a crafty, MGM follow-up to the Master of Suspense's jarring Psycho. It also became an avant-garde catalyst for such popular, beasts-attack movies as Jaws, Frogs, WillardSquirm, PiranhaGrizzly and Day of the Animals.

Classic Monsters of the Movies, writers/researchers, Nige Burton and Jamie Jones, grant us a thorough analysis of this fine-feathered, classic with 36 pages of detailed insight, partnered with sumptuous, poster and photo reproductions.

As such, this "exclusive deluxe edition" covers The Birds' development from Daphne du Maurier's favored novella to Evan Hunter's absorbing, slow-burn screenplay, as filtered through Hitch's deft conceptualization.

The issue contains bios on the movie's stars, Rod (The Time Machine) Taylor,  Tippi Hedren, Suzanne Pleshette, Jessica Tandy, Veronica Cartwright, Ethel Griffies, Lonny Chapman, Joe Mantell, Doodles Weaver, Richard Deacon and Malcolm Atterbury, along with such significant contributors as cinematographer Robert Burks, Disney animator Ub Iwerks and sound-consultant Bernard Herrmann. (Incidentally, the movie is devoid of a traditional score, instead leaning on sound orientation). A reverential synopsis of Hitch's overarching career is featured, as well.

As bonus treats, Burton and Jones serve their welcomed "Quotable Quotes" and trivia inserts, which fortify this volume as an all-around, enjoyable, terror treasure.
