CANDID MONSTERS #32: ANGRY RED PLANET/TARANTULA DOUBLE FEATURE

Candid Monsters #32 (aka SPFX Magazine #8) was recommended to me by artist Rick "Spine" Mountfort, and as such, I purchased it. It's a breathtaking, 140-page submission that places adoring emphasis on Ib Melchior/Sid Pink's Cinemagic wonder, Angry Red Planet, and Jack Arnold's perennial favorite, Tarantula, two colossal hits of the 1950s.

The issue was composed by producer Ted (The Deadly Spawn/Night Beast) Bohus. He does an exceptional job covering both movies, layering their productions with extensive detail. That means he laces the content with such superlative additions as quotes (from the casts, crews, creative contributors, writers and directors); artwork tests; and the filming locations (including backlot sets), with nifty, then-and-now comparisons.

The avid overflow of black-and-white photos is also remarkable, being large and clear (in particular when it comes to the stunning actresses, Naura Hayden and Mara Corday, as well as the bizarre ratbatcrabspider creature and the frightful, eponymous arachnid). Mainly, though, the visuals focus on primary, publicity shots and various, behind-the-scenes accompaniments, in addition to a nifty, Angry Red Planet, monster drawing by none other than the talented Mr. Mountfort, which buffers a photo of the revered Mr. Pink.

I'm grateful that Rick recommended Candid Monsters, and now I, in turn, can recommend it to you. Volume #32 will make you a staunch believer in Bodhus' scholarly care and attention, and because of it, you'll come away a bigger fan of both films. I know I have.
