The products I review don't need to be fable-oriented. It's only important that they provide a satisfying means of escape. A lovely case in point is Larry (Horseman/The Mayfly) Johnson's Boston Sketchbook.
This wonderful, 135-page, hardback volume contains original, on-site drawings that are bound to delight those familiar with Boston, but even if one resides elsewhere, the imagery is so idyllic, so pleasing to the eye, that one will have no choice but to call them home. In any event, such noted locations as Hyde Park, West Roxbury, Dorchester, Roslindale, Jamaica Plain, Dedham and Milton comprise the plentiful tapestry, each labeled and dated for aesthetic convenience.
Johnson makes deft use of soothing blues for most of his images, though some examples incorporate combined, color schemes. In any case, the detail is fluid and charming throughout.
I'm partial to Johnson's lamppost, treetop and roof renderings, though his full, structural captures are as beautiful and intricate. Truly, every depiction is a quaint winner, to the point that it might prove hard to pick a favorite.
Flipping through the Boston Sketchbook is a perfect way to pass the time, and this labor-of-love creation would make an ideal gift for friends and family.
