Star Trek--The Motion Picture returns to the big screen via Fandango, in a 4K refurbished edition. In truth, this new release is a polished version of director Robert Wise's expanded cut, launched on DVD in 2001.
Trek--TMP is both beloved and despised by Trekkies, with the former cluster claiming it to be too prodding and pretentious for its own good, while the latter considers the production pleasing for his existential approach and mind-bending, Douglas Trumbull/John Dykstra effects.
The story centers on a marauding anomaly that consumes all that enters its path. This prompts the reunited U.S.S. Enterprise crew to seek and confront the perplexing formation, which reveals itself as V'ger, a massive, mechanical entity searching for its creator.
Persis Khambatta's Lt. Ilia became an international, sex symbol as a result of the '79 submission, albeit in an unorthodox way. Deltans are hairless, after all, but as Khambatta proved, a bald woman can sure look amazing in a short dress.
Special showings of Trek--TMP are slated for May 22, 23 & 25, so check your local listings for precise times. (The revised product is also available now on Paramount+ to all subscribers. The Blu-ray is slated for Sept.)
