Thanks to good ol' Alpha DVD, Mr. Lobo's Cinema Insomnia collection expands with an exciting, new release: Bloodsuckers of the Atomic Swamp, better known as Attack of the Giant Leeches. In this case, the print is tinted green through the amazing process of Swamp O Vision!
Directed by Bernard Kowlaski, written by Leo Gordon and produced by Gene Corman, Bloodsuckers/Leeches is known for its creepy, Florida Everglades ambiance. (The cave scene where the mutant bloodsuckers suckle their victims is notably nightmarish, particularly when emerald-ized!) This 1959 epic also became a legendary staple of drive-in theaters for years and gained even greater recognition on UHF throughout the '70s.
Incidentally, Playboy's Yvette Vickers adds a ton of sexy fun to the opus, coming across as rather Orion Slave Girl-esque via green! Her performance is not only sultry but convincingly conniving, giving Bloodsuckers/Giant Leeches a melodramatic quality that one won't find in most "misunderstood" movies.
To amp up the presentation's offbeat vibe, Mr. Lobo again lends his faithful, satirical touch, injecting leech-linked humor with a queue of rustic trailers and commercials to keep one grinnin' from ear to ear.
