Michael Ferentino's latest "Exquisite Machines" is a Bedtime for Robots penetration into pure, psychotic psychedelia.
In watching it, I couldn't help but recall such dark, science-fiction tales as "Brainstorm", "Strange Days" and "Dreamscape": stories of stolen reveries, flaunted for their uninhibited sincerity. In this regard, "Exquisite Dreams #3" projects the documented dementia and pain that might define any accursed life...
Ferentino dominates the session, acting not only as its humble host, but its spiritual star. His ghost (even when unseen) glides among the recorded sights and sounds, which include clips of crime; burlesque; glass-bottom boats; raygun light; big, plastic bugs; and blathering war. It's the stuff of youthful curiosity, turned forever strange.
In fact, the intertwining images are so disturbing that they could have sprung from the spry minds of Hannibal Lecter, Norman Bates and good ol' Leatherface--or better yet, the tortured orbs of Ray Milland in "The Man with the X-Ray Eyes".
The bottom line: Each chilling document cranks the viewer ever deeper into Ferentino's maddening machine, squeezing all sense out of the senses, until only idyllic insanity remains.
