Little Shoppe of Horrors #49 caters to two biggies, Robert Wise/MGM's The Haunting (1963) and Freddy Francis/Hammer Films Productions' The Evil of Frankenstein (1964), with a moody, front-cover design for the latter by Ron Lizorty and an electrifying, back-cover design for the former by Paul Watts; with classy interior, Haunting artwork by Chantal Handley and daring-do interior, Evil of ... artwork by Alstair Hughes.
The Haunting (led by the stellar cast of Julie Harris, Russ Tamblyn, Richard Johnson and Claire Bloom) is based on Shirley Jackson's chilling novel, The Haunting of Hill House (adapted for the screen by Nelson Gidding); whereas Hammer's third, Mary Shelley outing (penned by the studio's veteran producer/scribe, Anthony Hinds) is a historic team-up with Universal Studios, helmed by Hammer's beloved and bodacious Baron, portrayed by Peter Cushing, along with pro-wrestler, Kiwi Kingston's Jack Pierce-angled creature and Peter Woodthorpe's immoral mesmerist, Zoltan. Both articles are quite comprehensive, and connoisseurs will come away edified and fulfilled. Anthony McCay penned The Haunting piece and Constantine Nasr, The Evil of ... piece.
As a further tie-in to Evil of ..., author Dave Elsey essays the career of Roy Ashton in relation to the production; he also interviews Sandor Eles, the Baron's dashing and faithful assistant, Hans. Meanwhile, James McCabe conducts an insightful interview with the movie's anguished redhead, Katy Wild. Uwe Sommerlad increases the interview quotient by chatting with Caron Gardner, who in one vengeful, if not devil-may-care, scene catches Baron Frankenstein's eye, or is it the other way around?
Little Shoppe #49 is a horror-filled treasure. Insert it into your library, for this exquisite volume is destined to bring hours--no, make that days ... years--of frightful fun.
