Classic Monsters of the Movies pays homage to the cinematic sojourn that redefined the term, "blockbuster": Jaws.
Nige Burton and Jamie Jones do great justice to director Steven Spielberg and producers Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown's adaptation of Peter Benchley's bestseller, by covering its meticulous preproduction to its discursive execution (including the genesis of John Williams' iconic score, Bill Butler's superlative photography and Joe Alves and Robert A. Mattey's challenging, shark designs and effects), in addition to highlighting its spot-on leads: Roy Scheider's Chief Martin Brody, Lorraine Gary's Ellen Brody, Richard Dreyfuss' Matt Hooper, Robert Shaw's Quint and Murray Hamilton's Mayor Vaughn.
The production was a tumultuous one, indeed, and the authors essay this with empathetic conviction, making the reader an integral part of Spielberg and crew's plight to get it right. Burton and Jones also demonstrate the rewards of the filmmakers' perseverance, though in truth, Benchley's fable (as abetted by adapters Carl Gottlieb and Howard Sackler) was always emblematic of such, wherein desperate humans risk their lives (and sanity) to strike down a daunting, if not impregnable, obstacle.
As with other Classic Monsters of the Movies editions, Jaws is seasoned with entertaining trivia and quotes, plus gorgeous, publicity and behind-the-scenes photos, which will delight the movie's legion of fans to the biting end.
