Collection Recommendation: Mr. Lobo's Cinema Insomnia (Set 1) on Alpha DVD

Mr. Lobo's "Cinema Insomnia" is now available as an initial set of three, glorious releases through Alpha Video (oldies.com). 

First up is the Arch Hall Sr. favorite, "Eegah!", starring the towering Richard Kiel in the titular role (a resurrected caveman, no less), along with Arch Hall Jr, Marilyn Manning and Ray Dennis "Cash Flagg" Steckler. 

The shot-in-color, knuckle-dragging "Eegah!" played the drive-in circuit in its day and is now enhanced by Mr. Lobo's parenthesizing presence. Mr. Lobo even presents the film via a specialized, Nose-O-Vision process, making this great, "misunderstood" entry all the greater. 

Next up is a tribute to California's beloved "Creature Features" host, Bob Wilkins, packed with historic segments and insightful interludes. Watching Mr. Lobo and Mr. Wilkins team for the disc's content is a treat not to be missed. (For the record, Mr. Wilkins inspired Mr. Lobo to create "Cinema Insomnia". If that's not significant, I don't know what is.) "The Bob Wilkins Halloween Special" is a veritable classic that horror-hosting fans are certain to relish and revisit.  

Last but not least is "Cinema Insomnia's Haunted House Special", where our intrepid Mr. Lobo visits an abode of comedic fright upon an ambitious, Halloween night. He's joined by his fellow "Totally Fake Ghostbusters" (horror hosts Dick Dyszel, Jerry Moore, John Dimes and Rich Koz), as they explore the mysterious Chestburster House to prove that no real ghosts roam within. Laughs, chills and a heap of haunted-house movie trailers (plus a thematically related, Popeye cartoon) spill forth in this energetic entry from the one, the only (drum roll, please) Mr. Lobo.

CINEMA INSOMNIA MELTDOWN: MISTER LOBO REQUIRES URGENT HELP!!!

A SPECIAL REQUEST FROM MR. LOBO, VIA OUTER SPACE INTERNATIONAL AND PATREON:
"Last week our Cinema Insomnia Hard Drive -- donated by you the fans -- died. It contained more than 3 entire new shows worth of raw footage, promos, project files, and more, including our Season 16 Finale. 

Producer/Editor Aaron M. Lane took it in and the shop found it had a damaged USB controller. After it was replaced, the drive showed up but a file structure couldn't be seen. It was then sent to their office to try some more advanced Software and Recovery methods, before resorting to hardware recovery. 

We hoped it wouldn't be so bad that we would need to go the $1000 to $1500 lab recovery route. 

Aaron almost asked for it back to recover it himself, but with something this important we figured we'd hold our breath and leave it to the experts.

It turned out that a defective USB part fried everything. But hindsight is 20/20.

It seems now very likely we can get it all back. It was just a matter of what it will cost.

If the episodes aren't lost, they are worth thousands in time, talent, and resources. Cast and Crew traveled great distances to work for free and help us pull off this season on the smallest of budgets. The very least we can do is have a finished product so they can see their hard work and enjoy the fruits of their labor and the satisfaction of a finished product. 

If it were just me alone...I could try and do it all over again. However, even if that were the case--you can't catch lightning in a bottle twice...some aspects you can't ever reproduce. But we could try. 

If Mr. Lobo has to wash cars we'll make this work somehow.

Things are rough all over and we all have crushing real world stuff to deal with on top of this...and certainly it's not the end of the world. However, we feel what we do is important and important to try to save. 

The 'Advanced Recovery' place ran diagnostic & recovery and today told us what they found. 

It's not good news.

Once they repaired the USB controller and ran further diagnostics, they found that the drive arm and needle had been fried, so it can't read any data off of it & on a drive like that with proprietary firmware, they have to replace the parts with parts from an identical drive, so they're having to send it off to a lab in Austin, Texas which will take 3-5 days to get there & the recovery work averages $1000 - $1500. 

Luckily we anticipated the worst case scenario, even while hoping for the best. 

Aaron authorized the work and should hear from Austin by the end of the week.

We had $60 in donations today from Cinsomaniacs like you! And $50 from Kelly and $25 from Glen!  $10 from Robert and another $25 from Scott! And some change from the couch cushions...

So, adding everything up we have little under $200 towards the cause so far. A big chunk of our monthly Patreon proceeds will go towards this going forward.

MISTER LOBO RETURNS FOR BIZARRE DIMENSIONS #2!!!

Hot dog, hip, hip hurrah and hallelujah!!! Wrench Productions grants us a new, exciting issue of its out-of-this-world, illustrated anthology, Bizarre Dimensions, hosted by none other than the suave and perpetually entertaining, Mister Lobo. If you've enjoyed Mister Lobo's sublime presence on the celebrated Cinema Insomnia, you'll find him as equally engaging as a horror-comic host. 

Anyway, I was beyond pleased by what Wrench Productions cooked up for its initial installment (see March '17), and Issue #2 is as fine as a sequel as one could want.

In this instance, Mister Lobo ushers forth two, new tales, the first being "Wild Wood" by Cliff Jones and Andrew Richmond. If you like warped, virile, backwoods parables and gruesome films like "Grizzly" and "Claws", with some twisty terror thrown in, you're in for one mighty, mind-blowing treat. 

The second story is a psychotic excursion by Richmond and Peter Goadby-Watt, entitled "Barbarous Behavior". In this unorthodox, visual set-up (full-blown "Lobotastic Pictovision", that is), we get both big-city paranoia and sadistic fate, in what becomes a veritable nightmare to rival the best of "Rod Serling's Night Gallery" and "Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected".

I gotta say, ever since I was a wee lad, I've adored horror comics, and Bizarre Dimensions captures all the weird wonderment of the best of 'em, including EC's Tales from the Crypt and Vault of Horror, as well as Warren's Eerie and Creepy. 

Of course, it helps when one has a charismatic personality like Mister Lobo at center stage. No celebrity, whether in horror or comedy, can match the man, and his rise within pop-cultural heights continues in all facets, as Wrench Productions' Bizarre Dimensions #2 incontestably demonstrates.
