Collectible Time/Monster Team-up Image: John Febonio's Frankenstein in Outer Space II Print/T-Shirt

In January, I reviewed a John Febonio 11" x 14" print and matching T-shirt for Frankenstein in Space. The Monster, for that instance, captures Glenn Strange's semblance, though cloaked in astronaut attire and positioned on cosmic turf. 

Recently, I obtained another 11" x 14" print and T-shirt for Frankenstein in Space II. With the sequel, Febonio's Monster resembles Howard Sherman's Karloffian Bub (the congenial zombie of George A. Romero's Day of the Dead), as a Green Slime-ish specimen confronts him. Like the first Frankenstein in Space T-shirt, the imagery declares "Rejected By His Own World," thus piquing one's interest as to how Mary Shelley's man-made brainchild ended up on another world and what his mission might be.  

Frankenstein in Space II is reminiscent of those garish, crossover covers that Eerie Publications (a Warren Magazine competitor) produced. The Eerie covers depicted various breeds of monsters in a number of combative scenarios, which often stood independent of the comics' contents. 

For the record, I did, in fact, compare Frankenstein in Space #1 to Robert Gaffney's Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, but Febonio's follow-up emblemizes the idea to a much fuller degree.  

To say the least, I'm glad to have these vivid submissions among my Febonio collectibles. I must say, they're influential enough to spawn (hint, hint, Mr. Febonio) an ongoing series, with any number of famous, Frankenstein faces featured.

Collectible Time: John Febonio's Frankenstein in Outer Space Print & T-Shirt

Artist John Febonio paints mighty, masterful horror imagery, and he's fashioned quite an original, at that, with Frankenstein in Outer Space. 

The artwork print comes in various scales (my choice being 11" x 14"). Also, as with Febonio's "Creature Swim"/Gill-man and "Leatherface Sunset" prints, a t-shirt featuring the outer-space inspiration is available,. (I'll sport mine as soon as the weather warms.) 

Febonio's clever concept invokes Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, though Robert Reilly's "Frank" in that flick is an android and didn't look anything but human until the film's final phase. 

With that said, it's apparent that Febonio pulled from Glenn Strange's Frankenstein Monster for the creature's space-suited scowl, as evidenced by the above portrait shot.

Collectible Time: John Febonio's Carl Kolchak Print

Long before Scully, Mulder or Wednesday Addams investigated the paranormal, Darren McGavin's Carl Kolchak held the monster-hunting reins. Amazing artist John Febonio now offers a painted tribute to the persistent reporter. 

I chose a 16" x 20" print of Febonio's painting (as seen at the top of this post). Its color scheme is rich yet brooding, capturing the flavor of what one encounters in Kolchak's movies (The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler) or his weekly series (Kolchak: The Night Stalker), with our intrepid investigator embarking upon weird intrigue.

Collectible Time: John Febonio's Clash of the Titans/Medusa '81 Print

My readers are well aware that artist John Febonia has a knack for (re)creating famous horror scenes and characters. He now brings us a monster from a different origin: Medusa of Clash of the Titans 1981.

Ray Harryhausen's don't-catch-her-gaze monstrosity is one of the animator's finest renderings, with amazing, nuanced movements, from her snaked crown to her tremendous, ticking tail. 

Febonio does an equally amazing job capturing the gorgon's stealthy fluidity, as she pursues the brave but cautious Perseus inside her frightful lair. Febonio even layers this titan's fiery backdrop in a way that appears culled straight from celluloid, albeit modified by a warm. inimitable texturing. 

My Medusa, matte print measures an impressive 16" x 20", but Febonia offers this image (as with all his prints) in varying formats.

Collectible Time: John Febonio's Here's Johnny (Jack Nicholson/Torrance) Print

 

John Febonio keeps those great horror images coming with an amazing portrait of Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance from Stanley Kubrick's big-screen adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining. 

Nicholson's inimitable madness surely does shine (pun intended) in this striking, Here's Johnny print. I purchased my copy in a 16" x 20" format on sturdy matte paper, and boy, does it ever pop!

Nicholson's performance may have been too over the top for King, but for me and a legion of fans, it was perfection personified. To have this famous movie moment represented by Febonio's artistic hand makes it all the more special, not to mention collectible.

Collectible Time: John Febonio's Creature Swim (Gill-Man/Kate) Print & T-Shirt

Artist John Febonio hits the horror, high mark again (see Leatherface Sunset, March '22 post) with an awesome Creature from the Black Lagoon 16" x 20" matte-print entitled Creature Swim. 

This ravishing rendering features the Gill-man (in this instance, Ricou Browning) darting toward the super-shapely Kate Lawrence (Ginger Stanley understudying Julie Adams) in one of the most memorable moments from Jack Arnold's 3D classic.

Febonio's choice of colors works well, injecting the legendary clip with eye-catching vim, while at the same time not obscuring the mood of the iconic, black-and-white sequence. 

In addition to the print, Febonio's classy image adorns a t-shirt. Though I don't possess the pleasing physique of the lady featured in the above photo, you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be sporting my Creature Swim t-shirt proudly about town.
