WE BELONG DEAD #47: CRONENBERG SPECIAL

Body horror, dark intrigue and consequential distress morph through more than a hundred pages of We Belong Dead #47, in an uninhibited, David Cronenberg tribute, available in one's choice of two striking covers, one by Diana Robertson and the other by Mark Armstrong.

Between its alternate covers are essays on The Fly, Spider, Crash, ScannersVideodrome, The ShroudsThe BroodShivers, Rabid, The Dead Zone, Dead RingersNaked Lunch, eXistenZ, Crimes of the Future, CosmopolisMaps to the Stars, M. Butterfly, Eastern Promises, A History of Violence, A Dangerous Method and more, with glimpses into Cronenberg's creative kin, movie scores and eclectic choices.

As a revealing bonus, my dear confidant, writer/director/producer Ansel H. Faraj, gives a detailed account of seeing Howard Shore/David Henry Hwang's The Fly opera, a stage production based on Cronenberg's 1986, redux hit. I've yearned to experience the opera in whole (and perhaps someday will), but at least through Faraj's vivid recollection, I was able to envision the adaptation's macabre, melodious and libidinous grandeur. For that rare share, I'm most grateful.

Cronenberg is one of cinema's standouts and for good reason, with an inimitable, slow-burn style that's impossible to shake. We Belong Dead #47, thanks to its knowledgeable authors, does a sublime job celebrating the filmmaker and his venerable creations. If you're a Cronenberg connoisseur, We Belong Dead #47 can't be ignored.
