MR. LOBO'S CINEMA INSOMNIA: GAPPA REFURBISHED ON BLU-RAY

Mr. Lobo's Cinema Insomnia has a new, Blu-ray release that fans are certain to appreciate: an enchanting upgrade of Gappa, Monster from a Prehistoric Planet (sponsored by Black&White Projects Gallery).

As giant-monster connoisseurs are well aware, Gappa (aka The Triphibian Monster) is a 1967, Toho/Rodan wannabe (and Gorgo/King Kong variant) that more than matches the keenest, kaiju stompers. It was directed by Haruyasu (The Cat Girl Gambler) Nogushi and written by Iwoa Yamazaki and Ryuzo Nakaishi (based on a concept by Akira Watanabe), in which a hot-shot entrepreneur/mag-publisher (Keisuke Inoue) searches for exotic animals to populate his theme park, only to seize something far larger than anticipated.

Though the movie lacks originality and high gloss, it more than compensates such with the indisputable power to instill unbridled, childlike awe. That makes it an ideal, "misunderstood" masterpiece.

Thanks to Mr. Lobo (and of course, Miss Mittens), this re-release has been sharpened to include remastered sound and a special intro/interview with Cynetra Verona, the original episode's fetching Hulu Hottie and effective, vocal impersonator of the Mothra Fairy Twins (aka the Peanuts).

So many of us grew up with Gappa, whether catching it on UHF or VHF. Mr. Lobo's parenthesizing of its content only makes it more endearing and a worthy insertion for one's physical-media library.
