There's great cause to rejoice, for a new Mr. Lobo's Cinema Insomnia collectible has emerged from trusty Alpha DVD/oldies.com.
This time up it's Germany's sexy and scary, black-and-white cult classic, Horrors of Spider Island (aka A Corpse Hung in the Web), written/directed by the prolific Fritz Bottiger.
The story centers on nightclub manager Gary Webster, portrayed by Alexander D'Arcy (the Count in Blood of Dracula's Castle), who treks from New York to Singapore with his curvaceous dancers, only to have their plane crash, leaving the group stranded on a mysterious, Pacific island. It's there that a mutant spider bites Webster on the neck, turning him into a mad, subhuman hybrid that proceeds to stalk the scantily clad babes.
The ladies are truly the film's tasty draw and include Barbara Valentin (Freddie Mercury's faithful confidant), Elfie Wagner, Helga Franck, Helga Neuner, Dorothee Parker, Thelma Vandenberg, Gerry Sammer and Eva Schauland. Their sumptuous attributes enhance the exotic scenery with enough eye candy to keep any Playboy connoisseur pleased; and on the monster front, the arachnid puppet and D'Arcy's ferocious make-up won't soon be forgotten, creating a wild contrast to the production's pin-up overflow.
Of course, to spice up the psychotronic panache, the lively Mr. Lobo injects his cheerful charm among the substantial segueways, which are bumpered by spidery trailers, swingin' commercials and cat-fight contention between our host's beautiful spouse, Dixie and the tempting Jessie Seeherman.
Mr. Lobo's Cinema Insomnia: Horrors of Spider Island is an entertaining package geared to stimulate any forlorn time slot with gratifying "misunderstanding".
