FAREWELL, SIR IAN HOLM...

To "Alien" fans, you'll always be synonymous with the synthetic Ash; while to Tolkien fans, you'll remain the proverbial Bilbo Baggins. Your greatness, however, doesn't begin or end in either profound instance.

You made an artistic impact as well in "Greystoke: the Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes"; "Robin and Marian": "The Man in the Iron Mask '77"; "The Fifth Element"; "Ratatouille"; "Frankenstein '68" (as both creator and creature); "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein '94" (as Victor's father); "From Hell"; "Dreamchild"; "Alice Through the Looking Glass '97"; "Animal Farm '99"; "The Borrowers '92"; "Loch Ness"; "Brazil"; "Naked Lunch"; "eXistenZ"; "S.O.S. Titanic"; "Juggernaut"; "Shout at the Devil"; "Jesus of Nazareth"; "Chariots of Fire"; "War of the Roses '63"; "A Midsummer's Night's Dream '68"; "Richard III '68"; "Henry V '89"; "Hamlet '90"; "Time Bandits"; and "Napoleon and Love".

You were, above all, the epitome of urbanity, with the astute skill to make audiences cringe yet smile. Your departure may fill us with an emptiness, Mr. Holm, but for what you gave us, our world--our lives--will be ever the richer.
