"Mr. Lobo's Cinema Insomnia" collection expands with another set of Alpha (oldies.com) DVD releases.
First up is writer/director Herk Harvey's haunting classic, "Carnival of Souls", starring the captivating Candace Hilligoss, the tenacious Sydney Berger and good ol' Harvey as the story's standout specter. The avant-garde affair is said to have influenced "Eraserhead", "Jacob's Ladder" and "Night of the Living Dead", in addition to performing as an unofficial, feature-length "Twilight Zone", but when all is said and done, "Carnival" is its own creepy gem.
Mr. Lobo (along with some good-spirited hijacking from Francois Fly and Lady Skank'nstein) churns respectful giggles to sew the segments together, embellishing "Carnival'"s existential allure.
Next up is George A. Romero/John Russo's "Night of the Living Dead", which spawned a subgenre of flesh-eating mayhem. The deft cast and contentious characters are part of cult-flick legend, and Mr. Lobo does 'em all utmost justice, layering on ghoulish humor, chewy commercials and salty seasonings that will no doubt delight the movie's legion of fans.
As an extra-special supplement, this "Night" edition includes an interview with Cassandra Peterson: Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, conducted by none other than our beloved Mr. Lobo. Wow!!! Without question, this is the most candid interview ever staged with Ms. Peterson, and the chemistry between the two participants is guaranteed to charm.
