More by accident than plan, I came across these nifty, what-if lobby-card/poster images by renowned mashup artist, Nick Perks. I was so thrilled by his imaginative, alternate-reality renderings that I couldn't help but share a couple here.
Also, to have seen Crabbe interact with Boris Karloff and/or Bela Lugosi (whether in a monsterized, comic-book context or otherwise) would been nothing short of ingenious. However, if Crabbe had played Superman, what would the Man of Steel's limitations (if any) have been against the Frankenstein Monster and Count Dracula? What would the scripts have entailed? If James Whale and Tod Browning had been involved in the productions, how would they have tackled the superhero content? Would George Zucco have played Lex Luthor...Paulette Goddard, Lois Lane?
Of course, such questions are relegated to whimsy, with no definitive answer to be had, but they sure do get one's imagination rolling, just like when one reads of such ill-fated proposals as "King Kong vs Frankenstein"; "Kong vs Orca"; "Mighty Joe Young Meets Tarzan"; "The Wolf Man vs Dracula"; "Dr. Phibes Meets Count Yorga"; "Michael Myers vs Pinhead" (i.e. "Helloween")..."Freddy vs Jason vs Ash" (okay, that one at least hit comic-book form).
For a hoot, what are some of the fantastic team-ups/rallies you might have fancied (or yet fancy) on the big (or small) screen? Feel free to post your thoughts below...
Hmm, how about Hulk vs. Wolverine?? I’d love to hear your thoughts on that team up!!
ReplyDeleteInteresting that you should mention that...
DeleteBefore the whole movie Avengers thing got rolling, my friend, Ray Costello had suggested to me that a Hulk/Wolverine movie team-up would be an ideal avenue to pursue (i.e., with Logan tracking the Hulk). This idea has been done in comics, and there's no reason why such wouldn't work on film.
Now that Disney has its grasp on X-Men, I suppose a live-action, cinematic attempt is conceivable, if Universal is willing to allow Hulk to be used in such a way. (The only reason we haven't gotten more solo "Hulk" movies is because of Universal's reluctance, or so I've heard. I'm not sure if Universal would be open for the X-Men crossover. Nevertheless, I think a Hulk/Wolverine movie could be stunning, if not monumental.)
How about Godzilla vs Gammera or Flash vs King Kong?
ReplyDelete"Godzilla vs Gammera" is, indeed, long overdue. There's definitely an audience eager for its manifestation. I'd LOVE to see it happen.
ReplyDeleteGosh--"Flash vs King Kong", eh? Hey, I didn't think "Green Lantern/Planet of the Apes" would work, and I was sure wrong about that. Also, Flash has Gorilla Grodd as a prime adversary. Perhaps Grodd could tie into the Kong mythology somehow. In fantasy, the possibilities are endless!
PS: The time-travel element could come into play with Barry Allen zooming to various, alternate Kong realities: 1933...1976...1973...
DeleteI read that Hammer Studios wanted to do its own HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN. It would have been fun if Peter Cushing's Baron Frankenstein had gone up against Christopher Lee's Count Dracula.
ReplyDeleteI also read about Hammer’s alleged monster-rally proposal. Don’t know how much validity there is to the claim, but I’m sure it would have been spectacular. Cushing’s Baron could have even aligned with Lee’s Count. That would have worked as well. (From what I recall, Oliver Reed’s Leon the Lycanthrope would have also appeared.)
DeleteSupposedly, at one point Hammer had plans to team Lee’s Count with David Peel’s Baron Meinster from “Brides of Drac”. That would have been a terrific team-up in its own right. It would have been a neat way to bridge the Hammer/Drac mythology.
How about super girl vs. cat woman??
ReplyDeleteFor the sake of the CW scene, I could see that happening, if the variables were right, but considering CW’s downward spiral, maybe it’s just as well it doesn’t happen in that neck of the woods right now.
DeleteThe door is still wide open with possibilities in the DC Movie Universe. The more the ingredients are mixed, the better it can only get. Perhaps when the air clears and a new direction is paved (i.e., depending on whether “Aquaman”, “Shazam!” and “Wonder Woman 1984” are hits or misses), WB can further test the waters with various team-ups, both amiable and adversarial.
The online/subscription DC Universe could also plunge into team-ups, particularly animated ones. I think a Catwoman/Supergirl crossover could certainly fly as an animated feature or series. I, for one, would be on the edge of my seat in amorous anticipation.
