DECAY, DEATH AND DARKNESS: BEKSINSKI'S ARTFUL, AURAL APOCALYPSE

The ingenious Raffaele Pezzella, aka Sonologyst, pays homage to the distinguished, dark-domain painter, Zdzislaw Beksinski, with an intense, eleven-track excursion composed by some of Eighth Tower Records' most innovative artists.

To say the least, I was ecstatic to gain access to the tribute. After all, Beksinski's creations have inspired my weirdest reveries. Decay, Death and Darkness: Aural Visions of Beksinski's Art is, in fact, a soundtrack for any number of the visionary's poignant deviations.

From the earliest track, the compilation's intent beams clear: a dry grinding of gears, turning upon fruitless rote, thanks to Nuno Veiga's jarring "Boa Morte" ...

Adonal Atrophia's symbolic "Winter" follows: broken and empty ... the grinding now dead, the temple corroding; its purpose has fled ...

"Inside Yjyk Mar" by mKnoise and Visions of Abraxas is just as icy, but if one listens hard enough, long enough, one will detect its queer, imminent scraping. Something is on the rise! But how? Is it marauders ... mutants ... a twisted reflection of one's frayed fear? Whatever the case, danger is near ...

Through the foreboding ascent comes Deathwalk's "Supreme Acausal Rituality": a strumming of stinging static ... a splashing of soothing slime; followed by Psionic Asylum's stony "The World of Bones", where hints of the deformed, crazed and vengeful blend into all that's sublime ...

All one can do is creep into the dimness, drenched by Sonologyst's numbing "Noumeno", but is this wise ... some treacherous trick? Suddenly, from out a squeaking cacophony come rats, rats and more rats (oh, wouldn't ravenous Renfield be ever so pleased!), tumbling and pouncing off shock waves spurred by Nihil Impvise's vehement "Sonata For Vermins" ...

One's skin is ripped ... gnawed. Blood splatters the flanking metal and brick. One hears the cautious call of Stigmate's "Processing of a mourning". Cowardice devours mettle. Cordis Cincti Serpents' "Beyond the Mauve Zone" authenticates one's sorrowful state ...

Maybe ... just maybe one can still salvage a scrap of inner peace, so in a final ditch, one sprints into the burning sunlight ... the toxic heat ... beholds grimy girders and crowns them new gods. Occult Odyssey's heady "Na' Ammah Domina Irarum Indulgentes" spreads, easing one just enough to release a compliant sigh and yet ...

By the time the grisly truth is etched, Deofol's "SKOV" has snapped the world into frantic fruition. One is now but a fragment among fragments, embedded in Beksinski's pigments, forever free to crumble ... fade ...

Such impressions, of course, are of my own device. You can conjure your own, but no matter what you design, what enters your mind will be Beksinski's. Decay, Death and Darkness harbors his savage spirit, his hazed heed ...
