R.I.P. PHYLLIS COATES

You entered most of our lives as Lois Lane in Superman and the Mole Men and thereafter, in the first 26 episodes of George Reeves' popular, television series. Decades down the line, you played Ellen Lane, mother of Teri Hatcher's Lois on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, tying a sentimental past to a sentimental present.

Then there are your energetic serials: Panther Girl of the Kongo, Jungle Drums of Africa and Gunfighters of the Northwest, where excitement and titillation knew no bounds.

For the record, your features proved pretty special, too: I Was a Teenage Frankenstein; The Incredible, Petrified World; Thompson's Ghost; Girls in PrisonBlood Arrow; Wyoming RoundupNevada BadmenCanyon Raiders; Canyon AmbushMarshal of Cedar RockThe MaverickCattle Empire; Outlaws of Texas; Man from Sonora; TopekaValentino; Perils of the JungleBlues Busters; Smart Girls Don't TalkThe Baby Maker; Whisper Kill; Kiss Shot; She's Back on BroadwayHere Comes the Girls; and Goodnight, Sweet Marilyn

Then there are your ceaseless, television stints: The Lone Ranger; The Cisco Kid; The Adventures of Kit CarsonDeath Valley Days; Tales of Wells Fargo; Gunslinger; The VirginianRawhide; Gunsmoke; Black SaddleDr. Quinn, Medicine Woman; Ramar of the JungleLassie; Leave it to Beaver; The DukeThe Great Gildersleeve; HennesseyTopperScience Fiction Theatre; The Best of the Post; Navy Log; I'm the LawPerry Mason; The Untouchables; Midnight CallerHawaiian Eye; Slattery's PeopleThe Millionaire; Willy; The Patty Duke Show; and This is Alice, where you played the practical Mrs. Holliday for thirty-nine, heartfelt entries.

You covered tremendous ground, Ms. Coates, and because of that, we'll continue to revel in, and revisit, the many warm memories you've instilled in our hearts.
