Each year Hallmark produces a wealth of captivating, pop-cultural, Christmas ornaments; 2023 is no exception. For the sake of this post, I'm hosting three from this year's lineup: two from Star Trek and one from Doctor Who.
Kicking off the post is a sterling example of classic Trek's "Who Mourns for Adonais?": a beautiful, 4" x 5", Jake Angell sculpture, which is absolutely mesmerizing for how it includes the great hand of Michael Forest's Apollo grasping the Enterprise.
I always liked the "Adonais" story for its weaving of Greco-Roman mythology into Gene Roddenberry's futuristic tapestry. Angell deserves infinite pats on the back for bringing this one to life. (Also, the ornament works as an unofficial companion piece to Franklin Mint's Star Trek V/"God Head" globe-sculpture from the mid-nineties. Remember that one?😉)
The next featured is a Next Generation, 5" x 3" salute to Brent Spiner's beloved Mr. Data, who's seen holding his cat, Spot, as featured in the episode "Schisms."
By pressing a button on the ornament's stylish (battery-operated) base, one can listen to Data's heartfelt, "Ode to Spot" from the episode. And the ornament's resemblance to Data is impressive, but Spot is, well, beyond spot-on. (Wish Hallmark had revealed the artist on this one, because the individual deserves ultra accolades.)
The third ornament featured is of Matt Smith's eleventh Doctor: a 4.5" x 1" piece that's steered to please Whovians near and far. Take a gander at the detail on the Doctor's tweed, elbow-patched jacket; burgundy bowtie; and that cool, folded-arm stance. Yep, this is Smith's Doctor to a tee! (Again, no artist is credited, which is a shame, because the sculptor sure hit the commendable bullseye.)
More Hallmark ornaments for Star Trek, Doctor Who and beyond are now available at one's local Hallmark store. (Those ornaments not yet available can be preordered for one's convenience.) Check Bizarrechats for further showcasing!
