It's time for another Michael F. Housel-hosted, freebie double feature, and why not make this one a Christopher Lee, Hammer-time event? As such, at 6 pm on April 9th at the Home Base Cinema, 1300 Franklin St, Trenton, NJ, The Devil Riders Out (aka The Devil's Bride) and Rasputin the Mad Monk will be the sinister headliners, beamed from luxurious Blu-rays onto an awesome, 7' screen.
The Devil Rides Out (1968) is based on Dennis Wheatley's celebrated novel, as adapted by the bountiful Richard Matheson and directed by the legendary Terence Fisher. Lee, who led the charge in getting this one made, is outstanding as Duc de Richleau, a shrewd, occult adventurer, who challenges Charles Gray's calculating, Satanic villain, Mocata.
Rasputin the Mad Monk (1966), scripted by Anthony (Curse of the Werewolf/Phantom of the Opera 1962) Hinds (aka John Elder) and directed by Don (Face of/Brides of Fu Manchu) Sharp, is more of a historical excursion than one of horror, but the story is still laced with bold morbidity, thanks to the towering Lee who gives (as Hammerheads will attest) one of his finest, antagonistic performances. (And for those wondering, cheapo, Grigori Rasputin, cardboard beards will, indeed, be gifted to those who attend, keeping with the movie's original-release novelty.)
