We Belong Dead #43 ("From Hugo to Hammer") features an affectionate reflection on Michael Powell/Emeric Pressburger's Black Narcissus (based on Rumer Godden's nunnery novel), by acclaimed filmmaker Ansel (Loon Lake/The Great Nick D) Faraj.
Per his "Ansel's Asylum for the Psychotronic," the author/filmmaker confirms that the 1947, Deborah Kerr-led Black Narcissus is his favorite movie, detailing its influential, creepy complexities and simulated, Himalayan imagery, and does so in a way that will make one want to revisit this significant, cinematic entry as soon as possible.
In addition to Faraj's superb analysis, the 119-page, thrill-packed issue features fruitful articles on Tod Slaughter; Algernon Blackwood; British ghosts; Scrooge (A Christmas Carol) 1951; early Hammer Horror; Trilby (Svengali) adaptations; Dead of Night 1945 (with its ultra-chilling, Hugo the Dummy installment); Mother Riley Meets the Vampire; Daughter of Darkness; House of Darkness; The Rocking Horse Winner; The Monkey's Paw 1948; The Fall of the House of Usher 1947; The Quatermass Xperiment; Devil Girl from Mars; Stranger from Venus; and many more.
We Belong Dead #43 comes in a choice of two covers: the casket-sprung-hand example, which kicks off this post, and the British-thespian counterpart, featured beneath it. Either version is worthy, considering the edifying contents.
