Nige Burton and Jamie Jones, through Classic Monsters of the Movies, do a great service to the jarring, 1958, 20th Century Fox classic, The Fly, with a stunning (and aptly creepy), 36-page tribute.
Based on the Playboy short story by George Langelann, The Fly was directed by sci-fi/adventure veteran Kurt Neumann and adapted by James (Shogun) Clavell, headlined by Al (David) Hedison, Vincent Price, Patricia Owens, Herbert Marshall, Kathleen Freeman and Charles Herbert, in a tale of a teleporter-device scientist, Andre Delambre, who gets his molecules scrambled with the titular insect.
Burton and Jones do an outstanding job analyzing the movie, acknowledging how it was designed to be experienced through the eyes of Delambre's wife, Helene, which placed significant weight on Collins' shoulders to carry events as she frantically searches for the fly with the white head.
In addition, Burton and Jones cover The Fly's extensive publicity campaign and dip into its sequels, Return of the Fly and Curse of the Fly, bridging these areas with bios on the stars and the behind-the-scene contributors (including makeup man, Ben Nye), sensational stills, tasty trivia and fun facts.
The Fly, tribute volume is one that fans will celebrate, and I sure wouldn't mind if Burton and Jones delved even deeper into its sequels with special editions, as well as The Fly 1986 and The Fly II. There's so much more to dissect and appreciate when it comes to this fine, morphing franchise.
