LARRY JOHNSON'S THE COMPLETE MADAME BOOGALA, VOL 1

One of artist Larry Johnson's most popular characters is Madame Boogala, who for many years guest-starred in his anthology, Tales of Fantasy. She's a mischievous, spiteful disciple of the Magic People and a tearoom, fortuneteller extraordinaire with deep, demonic connections. Accompanied by her obedient son, Goomar, she springs wicked traps that would make the likes of James Moriarty, Fu Manchu, Doctor Satan and Ming the Merciless blush.

The Complete Madame Boogala, Vol 1 holds nine, conniving tales. These black-and-white, reprinted stories are accompanied by a revealing, author intro and feature such devilish delights as a mystical scarf; an unveiled, enemy spirit; a magic lamp and genii; impetuous curses, plus Goomer transforming into a giant, city-bashing kaiju. Throughout the content, one gets a real, Faustian feel for Madame Boogala's tactics, for there's always a sly catch to her guileful maneuvers and a hard lesson to be learned, much in the thoughtful way of Johnson's comparable Tales of the Broken B

Madame Boogala is a great character from a great artist/storyteller. I recommend The Complete Madame Boogala, Vol 1 to those who enjoy offbeat quandaries that brim of action, allegory, humor and suspense.
