Some claim that Welcome Back, Kotter led to John Travolta's attainment of Saturday Night Fever, but I say, The Boy in the Plastic Bubble sealed the deal. And Mr. Lobo has sealed Travolta's legacy even further by presenting this 1976, made-for-tv event via Cinema Insomnia Blu-ray.
The Boy in the Plastic Bubble (like a particular Seinfield episode that gained fame later down the line) is based on the real-life accounts of two young men who were plagued by weak immune systems, thus forcing them to exist in shielded confinements. The inspired concept (rolled into one main character, named Tod Lubitch) was directed by Randal Kleiser and adapted by Douglas Day Stewart and Joe Morganstern, with Robert Reed and Diana Hyland portraying Travolta's parents, capped by a special appearance by Ralph Bellamy as their faithful, family doctor (and cameos, no less, from legendary astronaut, Buzz Aldrin and Travolta's Carrie co-star, P.J. Soles).
Glynnis (Law & Order) O'Connor plays Travolta's spunky girlfriend, and their "misunderstood" relationship comprises most of the movie, giving Mr. Lobo open range to spoof the sappy scenario.
Viewers are also treated to terrific Travolta extras, which include trailers for Carrie, The Fanatic and Staying Alive; an abbreviated, Battlefield Earth prelude; a post-credits, Pulp Fiction inclusion; and L. Ron Hubbard/Scientology jabs galore. In many respects, watching the Cinema Insomnia presentation of The Boy in the Plastic Bubble isn't far removed from viewing the film upon its inaugural night, only improved by Mr. Lobo's keen, COVID-comparative insights; Reel 7 Girl, Rita Failure's lyrical lustiness; and Aaron L. Lane's smooth, directorial parenthesizing.
