The sequel to 2002's Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla conquers the big screen via Fathom Events this month.
Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. not only rematches the green goliath with his mechanical counterpart (aka Kiryu, a near-obsolete, Earth-protection device, which harbors the first Godzilla's bones) but features appearances by Mothra and her twin offspring. (In truth, Tokyo S.O.S. is as much a peripheral sequel to Mothra '61 as it's a Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla continuation with a thematic link to Godzilla '54.)
The 2003 effort, directed by Massaki Tesuka, who co-scripted with Masahiro Yokotani, stars Hiroshi Kiozumi (leading man of the original Mothra, Godzilla vs Mothra/The Thing, Ghidrah and Dogora), in addition to Yumiko Shaki (reprising her role from the previous chapter), Miho Yokiosha, Koh Takasugi, Akira Nakao, Nabaru Kaneko, and Masami Nagasawa and Chihino Otsuka as Mothra's Infant Island fairies, among other swell cast members.
The characters and their related performers take the militaristic (Top Gunned) scenario seriously, strengthening the action with a sense of duty and ardent cause. Tokyo, after all, is in peril (again) and must be protected, though the rubble sure does mount regardless of the valor!
Tokyo S.O.S.' effects are sleek, clear and becoming, and its plot holds great intrigue (in semi-synch with Terror of Mechagodzilla). It's a quality adventure for Toho/kaiju fans of all ages, and what a treat it'll be to experience it in theaters. (For American audiences, Tokyo S.O.S. was only ever a direct-to-DVD release prior to such.)
Tokyo S.O.S. stomps the Fathom circuit on March 22 and will be initiated by the exciting, 2022 animated short, Godzilla vs Gigan Rex. Check local listings for showtimes.
