For a swashbuckling change of pace from Cinema Insomnia's sci-fi and horror offerings, Alpha Video/oldies.com presents Mr. Lobo's high-seas take on Captain Kidd.
Captain Kidd is a 1945, black-and-white adventure, directed by the seasoned Rowland V. Lee, from a strapping story by Norman Reilly Raine and Norman N. Lee. As the title conveys, the movie salutes the infamous pirate, in this case portrayed by the cultivated Charles Laughton, who'd go on to reprise the role for a successful, Abbott and Costello "sequel".
Joining Laughton is cowboy icon Randolph Scott as the epic's romantic lead, Adam Mercy, and to sprinkle beauty upon the bawdy brine, Barbara Britton plays the elegant Lady Anne Dunstan. John Carradine, Henry Daniell, Sheldon Leonard, Reginald Owen and Gilbert Roland complete the memorable, forefront cast.
Captain Kidd has a stirring (Oscar-nominated) score by Werner Janssen and exquisite photography by Archie Stout, but what makes this rekindled presentation so endearing is, of course, Mr. Lobo and his enjoyable inclusions.
That means our host shares plenty of splashy jest and bubbly, OSI commercials to augment Captain Kidd's pelagic panache.
There's not too much to "misunderstand" about this one. Captain Kidd is an inarguable A-lister. Even with such prestige, it belongs alongside all other Mr. Lobo Presents Cinema Insomnia titles; so order today for a healthy heap of old-timey escape, at
