Though Christmas '22 is now a couple months past, its spirit prevails in Mr. Lobo's Cinema Insomnia's X-Mess Carol.
That means the 1935 version of Charles Dicken's beloved fable, aka Scrooge, occupies the spotlight. starring the distinguished thespian, Seymour Hicks in the lead (a role he reprised from a 1913, silent version); and on the who's-who, costarring front, we get Maurice (Planet of the Apes) Evans as a "poor man" and as the chain-clanging (though this time transparent) Jacob Marley, Claude (The Invisible Man) Rains.
Director Henry (East Is East) Edwards' version is actually quite quaint, as any take on A Christmas Carol should be, and to ensure its endearing quality, the aforementioned are joined by Oscar Ashe, Mary Glynne, Marie Ney, C.V. France, Philip Frost and Donald Calthrop, who give the production a "misunderstood" brush of charitable class.
To supplement the Yuletide feature, Countess Bloodsugar (Jessie Seeherman); Sally the Zombie Cheerleader (Nicole Brooks); Sally Jr (Beatrix); Francois Fly (Joe LaScola); Miss Mittens (as herself) and the ghostly trio of Joe Bob Briggs, Bob Wilkins and Vampira bestow their befitting auras to Mr. Lobo's festive, "sea-monkey virus" inserts. There's also a special appearance by Rich (Svengoolie) Koz; a chat with character-actor supreme, Daniel (The Munsters '22) Roebuck; charming Christmas commercials/trailers; and life-affirming lessons to keep our wayward host in check with the true meaning of the season, more or less.
Mr. Lobo's Cinema Insomnia X-Mess Carol is certain to brighten one's perspective any time of the year. With this super-sharp, Blu-ray release, it becomes an even more tenderhearted treasure to own.
