Time has republished its Star Trek: Inside the Most Influential Science-Fiction Series Ever (under the banner "55 Years + of the Final Frontier"). For those who missed this commemorative edition when it surfaced several years back, this is a great opportunity to seize the comprehensive curation.
In this edition, the classic, 1960s series and Next Generation are emphasized, with overviews on their related spinoffs, movies and products, as written by Emily Joshu, Richard Zoglin, Eliana Dockterman, Jeffrey Kluger, Justin Worland, Thomas E. Weber, Alex Fitzpatrick, Reed Tucker, Susanna Schobsdorf, Courtney Mifsud Intreglia, and good ol' William Shatner, who shares gracious insight on his friendship with Leonard Nimoy, which (as should come as no surprise) parallels that of James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock.
Thanks to the issue's consummate writing, the enclosed articles are, as Spock would say, "fascinating," celebrating Gene Roddenberry's hopeful vision, with an exploration of its many identifiable parables; its uber-famous fans; continuing, cultural impact; and scientific influence, in particular on NASA, as well as practical technologies in general.
Star Trek's diverse stars and characters get their respectful moments under the galactic spotlight, too, thanks to agreeable tidbits and sharp clips culled from their adventures.
For fun, a comparison (or perhaps that should be, a contrast) between Star Trek and Star Wars is charted, though in truth, the overlap plays a lot like apples to oranges.
Whether one is a dyed-in-the-wool Trekkie or casual admirer, Time's special edition is one to treasure; and can be purchased at drugstores, book shops and supermarkets nationwide.
