Collectible Time: 14" Mego Star Trek/Arena Gorn

One of my favorite Star Trek episodes is "Arena", directed by Joseph Pevney and adapted by Gene L. Coon from Fredric Brown's excellent short story.

In "Arena", William Shatner's Captain James T. Kirk is forced to combat a belligerent member of the lizard-like, Gorn race, performed by Bobby Clark. The Gorn proves a vicious opponent, but Kirk, of course, is a resilient hero, and well, if you haven't by chance seen the episode, I won't spoil it. (For a wee spoiler, the ending is different than in Brown's story.)

To commemorate "Arena", Mego has produced a 14" Gorn action figure. My generous friend, Mel, bought me one for my upcoming birthday. Hurray!

The figure's semblance is retro, in a sense, but more aligned with the character's make-up than the company's 8", brown-hued, '70s release. The head, physique and attire on this 14" counterpart comprise the genuine Gorn!

The figure also has 14 points of articulation, making it ideal for play and display if one doesn't wish to keep it MIB. (The box is a lovely embellishment, as one can see from the inserted images.)

Thank you, Mel, for maintaining your remarkable track record of fulfilling my collectible desires. I love Star Trek and its many guest-starring aliens. Among them, the Gorn is my all-time favorite, and this figure is a wonderful way to salute the powerful son of gun.

  1. For the record, the original, '70s Gorn was a knockoff of Mego's Lizard of Spider-man fame. While the Lizard was molded in green, the Gorn was molded in brown, no doubt to deflect contrast.
